Improve opportunities and working conditions for public interest technologists
Address the need for qualified technical talent in government
Support innovation in technical service delivery
Advocate for sustainable funding for the field
At Technologists for the Public Good, we’re focused on supporting technologists in using their skills and talents to advance the greater public good. We know that technologists are necessary to solve many of the countries’ pressing problems.
But as it stands, public sector technologists face uphill challenges in both securing jobs and in being effective in them, harming government’s ability to attract and retain great technical talent. To create better public services, we need to improve the job infrastructure for public interest technology workers.
Examples of policies and changes we’ll be advocating for across federal, state, and local levels include:
Creating more job opportunities for technologists dedicated to working in the public interest, with a competitive compensation package to make government jobs and boost staff acquisition and retention.
Improving and streamlining hiring processes for key technology positions.
Bringing public sector job titles and descriptions in line with skillsets, roles, and responsibilities of the tech industry today.
Empowering government technology experts to employ best practices, cut through red tape, use modern tools, and bring modern ways of working to government agencies.
Encouraging more work-life balance and flexibility in government jobs to reduce burnout, including embracing hybrid office arrangements, creating career growth paths, and rethinking residency requirements for public sector roles.
Budgeting for permanent and sustainable funding for government technology and innovation delivery teams.
